AKROPOLIS

Throughout the world greek restaurants may be known for low quality fast food, but not so at Akropolis Taverna Greca, found in the heart of Trastevere, which has surprised and delighted Romans with authentic, delicious Greek fare since they opened in 1999. Run by a family originally from Crete, this father and sons operation produces a varied menu, anchored in fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked, and at reasonable prices. The house favorites are Cretan specialties including feta saganaki, spanakopita and souvlaki. And for a special dessert beyond the obvious house made baklava (which is excellent), try their own greek yogurt topped with nuts and honey or, my personal favorite, rose water preserve. While Akropolis does do takeout orders, they don’t take reservations, so get there on the early side to beat the crowd.
